A new residential project has been proposed for development at 335 Pacific Avenue in Downtown Long Beach. The project proposal includes the construction of a new eight-story building offering spaces for residential uses, replacing the 1929 Varden Hotel. The project proposes to retain the historic Dolly Varden Rooftop sign.

Long Beach-based Urban Hotel Group, LLC is the property owner. Studio One Eleven is responsible for the designs.

The new multifamily residential building will rise to eight stories, featuring 141 residential units. The units will be designed as a mix of studios and one-bedroom apartments, ranging from approximately 380 to 770 square feet in size. Plans also call for parking spaces located at grade and in an underground garage.

Renderings depict a contemporary podium-type structure, with amenities in the form of a small courtyard on the third floor, a rooftop deck, and several recreation rooms on the interior. The project was enabled by a 2022 move by the Long Beach City Council which allowed the construction of micro-unit apartments within the city. Likewise, an inclusionary housing ordinance also adopted by the Council will require than 11 percent of the new apartments be set aside as affordable housing.
