A project proposed for developed at 200 North Central Avenue in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles has been moved forward. The project proposal includes the construction of a mixed-use complex featuring two buildings offering affordable hosing units for rent along with spaces for retail uses. The project replaced a city-owned parking lot.

Los Angeles City Council approved $48 million in funding earlier this month. The mixed-use project, named Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC), will bring 248 apartments along with with spaces for Go For Broke and legacy businesses.

The approved funding supports the construction of an affordable housing complex named First Street North. Plans call for two buildings bringing a total of 248 apartments. The residential units are designed as a mix of studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom floor plans. First Street North is reserved for households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area’s median income level.

The complex also offers space for offices for Go For Broke and an exhibition space centered around the life experiences of Japanese-American soldiers during World War II.

Carde Ten is responsible for the designs for the Go For Broke project. The project will offer two six-story buildings with 25,000 square feet of commercial space, half of which is reserved for legacy Little Tokyo businesses. Architectural drawings reveal facades wrapped around a street-level courtyard and pocket park. A new pedestrian paseo connects the site to Judge John Aiso Street to the west.

The project sits sits north of the Japanese American National Museum. The total cost of the project is calculated at $138 million. The estimated construction timeline has not been announced yet.
