A new affordable housing project has broken ground at 3rd Street and Dangler Avenue in east Los Angeles. The project proposal includes the development of affordable housing units on a vacant lot.

Non-profit entity National CORE is the project developer. AC Martin is responsible for the design concepts and construction.

The project proposes to bring 78 residential units into a four-story edifice. The residences will be offered as a mix of studios and one-bedroom apartments. A car garage with a capacity of 39 vehicles will be designed on the site. Onsite amenities include a community center, a playground, a rooftop garden, a public plaza, a pocket park and an interior courtyard.

The developer will set aside half of the apartments for chronically homeless and mentally challenged homeless individuals, while the remaining apartments would be reserved as general-purpose affordable housing.

Hope through Housing Foundation and PATH are also slated to provide after-school programs, financial coaching, and other services to residents.

Renderings reveal a colorful low-rise building, overlooking the L Line’s street-level tracks along 3rd Street. Additionally, National CORE has commissioned a 30-foot mural on the building’s south-facing facade from Boyle Heights-based artist Stephanie Mercado.  The installation, named East Los Luv, will use images taken during the project’s community outreach.

Construction has kicked off for the $44-million development and completion of the project is expected in 2023.
