Construction work is in full swing for a new affordable housing project proposed for development at 232 Judge John Aiso Street in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. The project proposal includes the development of a new mixed-use apartment complex offering affordable housing and commercial spaces in the form of two six-story buildings.

Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) is the project developer. Carde Ten is responsible for the designs.

Named Go for Broke Plaza and the First Street North Residences, the mixed-use affordable housing complex replaced a city parking lot on the site. The project brings 248 apartments designed as a mix of studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom floor plans. The apartments are reserved for households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the Los Angeles area’s median income level. Of that total, plans call for 80 units of permanent supportive housing for veterans, who would be able to receive care at a VA facility which sits north across Temple Street.

The project will include Go For Broke National Education Center, which will have an exhibit focused on the experiences of Japanese-American soldiers during World War II within the building. The new construction frames the existing Go For Broke monument.

Additionally, the project will also offer 40,000 square feet of street-level commercial space which LTSC hopes to lease to legacy Little Tokyo small businesses and organizations.

The project site is located north of the Japanese American National Museum.
