Scholar’s Grove, a new residential development at 1151 Oxford Road in San Marino, has received city approval. Located within the 207-acre Huntington Library campus, the project will rise on a 79-acre portion of the site.
Designed by VTBS Architects, the project will consist of seven two-story buildings containing a total of 33 residences. Plans also include a one-story, 3,312-square-foot clubhouse, known as the Wendy Munger Commons, and 98 surface parking spaces for residents and visitors. The housing options will be available for the Huntington Library’s research fellows.

The new buildings will add approximately 34,724 square feet of built space. Renderings show a Mediterranean-style design, featuring white stucco exteriors, red clay tile roofs, arched entries, and columned verandas. Four different building types are planned, offering slight architectural variations while maintaining a consistent style throughout the community.

As depicted in the site plan, access to the residences will be available through a vehicle entrance gate off Orlando Road, with a total height of 6 feet, 8 inches. The project also includes selective tree removal and new tree plantings within the historic Avocado Grove, although tree replacement is exempt from the city’s Tree Preservation Ordinance.

Scholar’s Grove is funded through a $40 million gift from the late Charlie Munger, a longtime supporter of the Huntington. The project will occupy the northern section of the property, integrating new construction within the historic and cultural fabric of the campus.
