A new affordable housing project is under construction taking shape and form at 1413 Michigan Avenue in Pico, Santa Monica. The project proposal includes the construction of a new four-story building offering affordable housing units.
EAH Housing is the project developer. KFA Architecture is responsible for the designs.

Named The Laurel, once completed, will bring a total of 58 residential units designed for formerly unhoused low-income applicants. The property will have 57 affordable units and one manager’s unit. The apartments will all be designed as studios, available for rent for households earning between 30 and 50 percent of the Santa Monica area median income level.
Renderings reveal wood-frame construction for the four-story building that features a C-shape footprint. Other than housing, the building offers space at the ground level for a courtyard, a patio on the second floor, a community deck on the third floor, and 12 parking spaces located at street level.
The developer has retained several elements of the former Nikkei Hall, including its community center, original windows, an entry porch, and woodwork. Additionally, the property’s Japanese garden is being restored.
The project site is located south of the 10 Freeway, on the former site of Santa Monica Nikkei Hall.
