A new mixed-use project has broken ground at 2420 East Cesar Chavez Avenue in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. The project proposal includes an affordable housing project with retail space on an empty Metro-owner property near Soto Station.

Abode Communities is the project developer and is managing the design concepts and construction. AHBE | MIG is designing the landscape.

Named La Veranda, the project broke ground on June 30, 2021. Plans call for the construction of two four-story buildings featuring 77 one, two, three-bedroom above 8,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space and a parking garage. On-site amenities include outdoor communal spaces, including a children’s play area, a jogging path, and a garden for residents.

Seventy-six income-restricted apartments will be reserved for low-income households. The remainder will be set aside for households earning no more than 20 percent of the area median income.

Los Angeles County has allotted $2 million in funding to the project via its affordable housing trust fund. The total budget for the project is estimated at nearly $63 million.

The project site is located at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Avenue and Soto Street, near the L Line Metro, neighboring new projects near the Mariachi Plaza.
