On June 18 Glorya Kaufman Creative Community Center celebrated its groundbreaking at the Wende Museum site, located at 10808-10860 Culver Boulevard. The Cold War Museum is also planning to add affordable housing.
AUX Architecture is responsible for the design concepts. Shawmut Design and Construction is also on the project development team.

Construction is about to begin for an expansion of Culver City’s Cold War Museum, which will soon add a new community center to its campus at 10858 Culver Boulevard. Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum, the United States Veterans’ Artist Alliance, Upward Bound House, and the Artistic Freedom Initiative are all contributing to the cultural and educational programming.

Renderings reveal designs for the 7,000-square-foot space, featuring a live performance theater, a demonstration garden, art spaces for veterans, and affordable housing for artists. The building will be developed as a contemporary low-rise structure with a facade in painted stucco, concrete, and aluminum. Serving as an amenity area, terrace decks will top the building.

The overall Wende Museum expansion also calls for converting part of the property’s existing community garden into six apartments – averaging 325 square feet in size – that would be reserved for low-income, homeless artist residents. Programs at the community center will be provided free of charge, per the groundbreaking announcement.

Construction is expected to begin in July 2022, with completion anticipated in 2023.
