Los Angeles Metro Rail has announced the opening of the highly anticipated K Line. The route adds seven new stops, and will eventually connect Metro Line E, which travels between Downtown and Santa Monica, to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The light rail line currently serves the communities of West Adams, Jefferson Park, Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park, Hyde Park, Inglewood, and Westchester. The official metro website states that “The K Line was designed and built with the help of community input and local voices to provide a faster, more convenient and reliable way to connect to jobs, schools and the rich cultural places throughout these communities.”
The first stop serving LAX is anticipated to open in 2023, entitled the Aviation/Century Station. The next stop, LAX/Metro Transit Center Station, is scheduled to open in 2024. The C & K Line Link currently provides free bus service between Westchester/Veterans Station and Aviation/LAX Station (C Line).
In celebration of the new stations, Systemwide rides were offered for free from October 7th to 10th. This included free rides on Metro Bike, Metro Micro (a short-distance shuttle service), as well as bus and rail lines. The newest stations included in the free service are Expo/Crenshaw, Martin Luther King Jr., Leimert Park, Hyde Park, Fairview Heights, Downtown Inglewood, and Westchester/Veterans.
Construction of the Aviation/Century Station is currently complete, but public access is not available due to the construction of the Airport Metro Connector Project. Work on the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station is ongoing. When completed, it will contain a bike hub, bus plaza, and customer service center. Future transit connections will include the Metro 117, 109 (BeachCities Transit), 3 (Santa Monica), and 6 (Culver City).
