A stretch of Veteran Avenue just south of UCLA is undergoing a quiet transformation as a series of small parcels give way to new housing. The latest addition is taking shape at 1402 South Veteran Avenue, where construction has topped out for a contemporary six-story apartment building facing the Westwood Recreation Center
Warren Techentin Architecture is steering the design.

The project brings 23 apartments in layouts that range from one bedroom to six bedrooms, an uncommon mix in a neighborhood where most recent construction has emphasized smaller units. A two-level subterranean garage with 21 parking spaces sits beneath the homes. The development was approved through the Transit Oriented Communities program, which secured additional building capacity while requiring three apartments to be reserved for extremely low-income households.
Renderings depict a geometric facade composed of angled frames and perforated screens that sit against smooth exterior walls. The pattern creates a sculptural presence on the corner and marks a clear departure from the aging low-rise buildings that line much of the surrounding block. Outdoor spaces include a landscaped rear patio and an upper-level deck.

The project is part of a broader cluster of work by the same development team. An 18-unit building is rising one block to the south, and a larger 47-unit concept is planned across Veteran Avenue. Together, these infill developments are shifting the rhythm of the corridor, introducing a more varied mix of housing types in an area long defined by mid-century apartments.
As construction proceeds, the building at 1402 South Veteran reflects ongoing efforts to add density near transit, recreation, and UCLA, reinforcing the role of small corner sites in incrementally expanding Westwood’s housing supply.
