A new housing project is taking form and shape in West Athens, Los Angeles. The project proposal includes the development of a bridge housing facility, providing shelter to uptown 176 people at a time.
KFA Architecture is managing the design concepts and construction.
Named Safe Landing West Athens, the project site is a parcel spanning an area of 3.1 acres. The property will operate 24 hours per day and provide shelter to uptown 176 people at a time. The shelter will yield a total built-up area of 90,000 square feet. The facility will include an intake clinic, an administration building, a kitchen & dining facility, a men’s dormitory, a women’s dormitory, and a couple’s dormitory. In addition to housing, the campus will offer health, mental health, and substance abuse treatments to future residents.
The project broke ground two years ago, and now construction is underway. An estimated construction timeline has not been announced yet. The property site sits near the intersection of Normandie and Imperial Highway.
Renderings reveal a series of single-story metal buildings that will be arranged around a landscaped central courtyard. At the time of its groundbreaking in 2019, there were more than 700 unhoused persons living within two miles of the Safe Landing site.
