A new mixed-use project is on the rise at 220 East Washington Boulevard in South Central, Los Angeles. The project proposal includes the development of a building offering affordable housing and retail spaces.
AMCAL Multi-Housing Company is the project developer. VTBS Architects is responsible for the design concepts.
The project site is a parcel spanning an area of approximately 1.35 acres. The project is named La Prensa Libre, alluding to the property’s past as a printing facility for the Spanish language newspaper La Opinion. The finished building will stand five stories high, featuring 105 residential units along with commercial space spanning an area of 7,300 square feet on the ground floor. A car parking garage with a capacity of 75 vehicles will be developed on the site.
The residential units will be offered as a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom dwellings. Most of the units will be reserved for households earning 60 percent or less than the area’s median income. A total of 25 apartments are to be reserved for transition-age youth earning 30 percent or less than the area’s median income.
At street level, the apartments will include a workforce development center and a cafe. Plans also call for on-site case management services for residents, to be provided by the Coalition for Responsible Community Development.
Renderings reveal a contemporary low-rise structure clad in gray, white, and olive-colored stucco and fiber cement panels. On-site open spaces will include a central courtyard, and a street-fronting public plaza.
Completion of La Prensa Libre is expected to take two years and be ready by 2023. The project is rising next to A Line, at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Los Angeles Street.
