A new permanent supportive housing project has started to take shape and form at 707 North Alvarado Street in Echo Park, Los Angeles. The project proposal includes the construction of a new six-story building featuring housing units available for rent at affordable rates, along with onsite community services.
SRO Housing Corp is the project developer. Egan Simon Architecture is responsible for the designs. Westport Construction is serving as the project’s general contractor.
Named Alvarado Kent, the project proposes to bring 81 apartments into a six-story housing complex. Out of the total apartments, 80 units will be developed as studio units set aside for low-income households. The building will also offer parking for 32 vehicles. Plans call for a community kitchen, a lounge, a computer room, laundry facilities, and onsite supportive services.
Renderings reveal a contemporary exterior expressed in a palette of white and blue. Onsite common amenities include a community room, a recreation room, and outdoor decks.
According to the SRO Housing website, the project will be available for chronically unhoused persons with mental illnesses, unhoused veterans earning 30 percent or less than the area’s median income level, and general low-income persons earning 60 percent or less than the area’s median income level.
An application submitted in February 2022 for tax credit financing estimated $43.2 million as the cost of the project. A project completion date of July 2024 is anticipated, with all units to be occupied by the end of 2024.
