A new residential project has been proposed for development at 5228 Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles. The project proposal includes rebuilding a three-story office building to offer revamped and renovated office spaces.

A nonprofit law firm, The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA), is the project developer. Urban Design Center is the project manager. House & Robertson is responsible for the designs.

The developer has begun work to revamp the existing office building which was built in 1972. The project broke ground earlier this week on April 17. Plans call for the construction of a three-story building offering private interview rooms, a children’s play area, and dedicated event spaces with room for legal clinics. Additionally, onsite employee parking and new landscaping efforts will be put in as a part of the project.

The project received generous funding from The Ahmanson Foundation, The S. Mark Taper Foundation, and The W.M. Keck Foundation, and individual donors.

The existing office features a historic mural by Chicano artist Willie Herrón III, which will be retained. The two-story structure is located east of Atlantic Avenue. The project is anticipated to be available in the market in 2025.
