A new affordable housing project is fully framed at its project site located at 414 South Crocker Street in Downtown Los Angeles. The project proposal includes the development of a new affordable and supportive housing complex. The housing complex is being built on the former site of the Umeya Rice Cake Company
Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) is the project developer. FSY Architects is responsible for the designs.
Named The Umeya, the new seven-story building will feature 175 apartments. All units will be developed as a mix of studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom floor plans. Plans also call for 13,000 square feet of ground floor space dedicated to community uses, retail, and service providers.
The units will be available for renters falling under the low-, very low-, and extremely low-income households. Half of the apartments will be offered as permanent supportive housing, offering wraparound services to formerly unhoused residents.
The Umeya feature a V-shaped footprint; housing space for two courtyards at street level. A new mural by Skid Row artist Showzart will adorn the wall of the apartment complex.
The project is expected to reach completion in 2025.
