Supportive Housing Almost Ready at 1355 Avalon Boulevard, Wilmington

A new supportive housing project has been proposed for development at 1355 Avalon Boulevard, Wilmington. The project proposal includes the development of a new four-story apartment building offering 54 supportive housing units. Plans call for the adaptive reuse of a 1950s Safeway on the site.

Brilliant Corners and Richman Group are the project developers. KFA Architecture is responsible for the designs.

Named the Las Palmas apartments, the four-story building brings 54 apartments designed as a mix of studios and one-bedroom dwellings, in addition to on-site offices for case management services.

Renderings reveal that the building will retain the exisitng Googie facade and sidewalk palm trees of the former supermarket. Within, raised floors were installed to elevate the apartments above the street level, and a courtyard was carved into the center of the building to provide light and open space for residents.

The new construction to the south shares a landscaped yard and a small courtyard with the former supermarket. Funding for the project was collected through the Measure HHH Challenge program. The project site is located toward south of the Pacific Coast Highway.
