Los Angeles World Airports recently announced the placement of the second pedestrian bridge structure over World Way. This bridge will connect the APM Center CTA station to Terminal 2 once the train system is complete. There will be six similar structures at Los Angeles International Airport in total, as part of the larger plan for the Automated People Mover (APM).
Steel trusses were pre assembled, then lifted into place with a 350-ton crane. Each piece weighed between 47,000 to 79,000 pounds. They were then supported over the roadway by a shoring tower while the segments were welded together.
Work on the floor and roof beams has now begun. This will require the installation of underdeck scaffolding that will allow construction to continue above the roadway. Of the project, Deputy Executive Director of LAMP, Jake Adams stated, “Building pedestrian bridges over the main access road at an active airport is no small engineering and construction feat. The continuous coordination between the builders, airport operations, and airlines made this key component of our ongoing transformation at LAX a success.”
The Vierendeel Truss was selected for the design. It is made out of horizontal and vertical support elements, eliminating the need for diagonal supports. The streamlined aesthetic was chosen to maintain consistency with the mid-century modern architecture associated with the airport.
