The Automated People Mover (AMP) is now over 87 percent complete at Los Angeles International Airport. A major milestone was recently reached when the segment over Century Boulevard, one of the busiest streets in the city, was installed over the course of four months. The improvement will make progress more recognizable, and change the skyline of the superstructure.
This feat was accomplished using the innovative cast-in-place segmental construction technique, and a traveling form system as a platform for the concrete to be placed. Unlike the bridges that will connect the AMP to Terminals, this technique pours the concrete in place, rather than using precast segments. The century Boulevard span required the installation of 13 segments, each approximately 15 feet in length.
Laura Ware, Spokesperson for LINXS Constructors, stated “”Building the APM has required that we employ innovative and creative solutions to a number of logistical challenges, making it a truly exciting project to work on.Using cast-in-place segmental construction is a perfect example. While it is an uncommon technique, it was determined to be the best solution when traffic conditions and space constraints on material staging were considered.”
When it is completed, the track will be 2.25 miles long. It will be an electric train system, carrying passengers in and out of CTA on elevated pillars, with three stops within the terminals. It will connect to off-site parking facilities, regional light rail transportation and the Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility. If work stays on schedule, passengers will be accepted starting in 2023. Work continues on the 250-foot long section spanning the Parking Structure 2B inside the Central Terminal Area (CTA), and the segment spanning east to west over Sepulveda Boulevard.
