A new milestone has been reached for the LAX upgrade. The pedestrian bridge connecting Terminal 1 to the Automated People Mover Station has been successfully installed over World Way. Earlier in the month, 209,500 pounds of steel were placed, over the course of four nights, to complete the project.
A 350-ton crane was used to install each prefabricated steel truss. The bridge was supported by a shoring tower as the segments were welded together. Construction required the coordination of Airport Operations, Airport Police, traffic and security officers and the construction team.
This is the fourth of six bridges that will be built for the project. The first was installed in June of 2021, at Terminal 4.5. Other bridges connecting to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 followed after.
Floor and roof beam construction is underway, which will end the installation of structural steel for the future pedestrian walkway. Glass installation is scheduled to begin in April for the Terminal 2 and Terminal 4.5 bridges. Two more bridges still need to be installed, connecting Tom Bradley International Terminal and at Terminal 5.5 to the Automated People Mover. They are planned to be placed by the summer of 2022.
