Work is wrapping up at 11 South Ash Street, in Ventura. The project will revitalize a section of main street, restoring the historic Elk Lodge building, and wrapping new condos around the exterior. Matilija Investment Prop is listed as the developer.

The site for the historic lodge was chosen in 1921, when The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was looking for a headquarters for their Ventura County location. Charles H. Russell designed the original structure, which embraced the popular Spanish Revival style of the time. It was completed in 1928. The order sold the building in 2004, moving to a new location. Since that time, it has functioned in various uses, including events and concerts.

The development of the site has been in the works for over 15 years, with initial meetings in 2006 and final approvals in 2007. Work didn’t progress until recently. The basement, first, and second floors, will be converted into 18 hotel rooms, a lobby/lounge, fitness room and laundry room for a boutique bread and breakfast.

15 new condos are being built around the existing structure, reaching four stories in height. Two of the units will be live/work designs. Some low income housing is included, with one unit falling under the very low income tier, and one under the moderate income tier. The addition is cohesively Spanish in style, with wrought iron and tile accents.
