Another major step toward expanding affordable housing in Santa Monica is now in motion at 1640 20th Street, where construction has officially begun on a new residential complex dedicated to low-income and moderate-income households. The proposed project will bring 78 new affordable units, thoughtfully designed to serve a wide range of residents and enrich the surrounding community.
The development is being realized through a partnership between Venice Community Housing and the Community Corporation of Santa Monica, two nonprofit leaders in community-driven housing initiatives. Atelier Cory Henry, in collaboration with KFA Architecture, is responsible for the designs.
Once complete, the seven-story structure will feature a diverse mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom floor plans, making space for families, individuals, and working professionals. Beyond the residences themselves, the development prioritizes comfort and connection through a suite of on-site amenities, including:
A rooftop community garden
Children’s play areas
Dedicated bicycle storage
Shared community spaces
On-site laundry facilities
Located just steps from Metro’s E Line, the property supports a car-free lifestyle and offers greater access to the wider Los Angeles area. With a strong focus on transit-oriented living, the project not only addresses housing affordability but also promotes sustainable urban growth.
The housing units are anticipated to be available for occupancy by mid-2027.
